L.I.C.C. 2nd XI v Ashton-under-Hill 2nd XI
Played Saturday 31st May
Cotswold Hills League – Division 5
A weakened Itchington II’s slipped to their second defeat at picturesque Ashton-under-Hill.
On winning his 5th consecutive toss, a complete reversal of last years fortunes, Itchington skipper Dave Buchholz decided to field first on a slightly damp track and outfield. Newman and Capaldi got Ashton off to a good start putting on 36 for the first wicket before Buchholz (10-2-30-2) trapped Newman LBW. Luke Fogarty (10-0-47-3) then got in the act with 3 wickets 2 of them caught by Buchholz, who took three in total, before Tommy Crosthwaite (10-0-37-3) completed his own 3 wicket haul. In between times Pearce and Hunting both scored 37 and Keen’s 16 n.o. from No.9 helped Ashton secure a fourth batting point before debutant Sam Pratt took his first league wicket to end the innings on 176. A solid performance in the field by Itchington in the circumstances.
Buchholz (26) and Jeff Rogers (31) put on 65 for the first wicket to give Itchington a solid base for the run chase but change bowlers Keen (10-6-19-4) and Cope (10-2-25-3) wreaked havoc with 7 wickets falling for only 15 runs leaving Itchington fighting a desperate rear guard action at 80-7.
Martin Greaves (23 n.o.) and Tommy Crosthwaite (40 n.o.) stepped up to the plate and showed their compatriots how to do it with an unbroken stand of 61 gaining two valuable batting points in the process and just as importantly denying Ashton extra bowling points in the process. The innings finished on 141-7 to show that with a little more help from their middle order colleagues a serious push for victory might have possible.
