L.I.C.C. v Stretton
Played Sunday 15th June
Another glorious Sunday afternoon saw Itchington’s XI take to an artificial wicket against hosts Stretton, and after winning the toss LI Skipper Tino chose to try and set the home side a healthy score to chase down.
. . . .And healthy it was, Will Grindal firing an ultra quick 158 (his 3rd ton of the season a feat which has never happened before), getting out chasing down the clubs high score. The opening partnership of Grindal & Richard Cressey saw the visitors to 147 off 23 overs before the latter was removed for exactly 50. This brought Greaves (20) to the crease who cleverly maneuvered the ball to get Grindal back on strike and enable him to finish on 158 off just 119 balls. The remainder of the Itchington top order then played some lovely shots and lost a few more wickets to finish on 267-5.
In reply Stretton’s openers Hayward & Spelman secured a sturdy start before a good close catch from Chapman dismissed Spelman off the bowling of Aulakh. This only got Stretton going, bringing all rounder Ratcliffe to the crease. There the two stayed until a bowling change saw McKenna produce a fabulous swinging yorker to dismiss Hayward on 30. Unfortunately for the home side none of the incoming batsmen were able to stay with Ratcliffe long enough to challenge their target or allow him a century, virtually falling apart and finishing 112 runs short.
Just to add in the Itchington bowling performance there was a rare chance of a hat-trick which bowler Chapman (2-0-9-3) fluffed and then produced the wicket taking ball with the next giving him 3 in 4 balls. Also the very impressive McKenna took 2 wickets in the last 2 balls of his spell of 8-1-26-4 to give him the chance of a hat-trick on his next outing !
