Long Itchington 1st XI v Warwick County Council Staff
Played Saturday 28th June
Cotswold Hills League – Division 2
Itchington continued their struggles at the bottom of the table with a disappointing defeat to promotion chasing Warwick County Council Staff.
After electing to bat the home sides’ openers Martyn Rawbone and Tom Cooper overcame a watchful start and began to punish anything loose. The 100 came up in 22nd over before Rawbone fell to Singh for a welcome 64. Cooper followed at 117 for 45 as Singh captured 3 wickets in 6 balls as Itchington declined to 120-4 and their momentum was lost.
Richard Cressey (31) and George Insall (28) put on 63 but the necessary acceleration never materialised and the innings ended on an ultimately disappointing 202-9 with 4 of the 5 visitors bowlers sharing the spoils.
The WCC openers started off with a stand of 58 before Andy Hobbis was dismissed for 30 in the 18th over. Another wicket fell and with 20 overs to go the score was 82-2 and the game was finely balanced. Veteran Duncan Gardener was finding his range however and once he saw off Martin Clark (1-17 off 10 overs) he produced a controlled aggressive knock of 69 n.o. containing 4 6’s and 5 4’s. He and Singh added 50 runs in only 6 overs to swing the game in the visitors favour as they ultimately romped home by 6 wickets with 5 overs to spare.
