1st team Match Report v Woodbourne, Saturday 18 July 2009

Published by under News

LI slipped to a disappointing defeat to struggling Woodbourne. After being inserted in favourable bowling conditions the home side failed to cope with the visiting attack who took the pace off the ball. They found themselves 12-2 and 38-4 off 22 overs before James Clarke and Tom Perks put on 62 in good time. With 10 overs left a late assault was promised but with 2 wickets falling in an over twice, including Clarke for 21 and Perks (34) to Jenkins and Rooney, saw LI subside again to 106-9. Good late hitting from Chapman (15 n.o.) saw the villagers use up their overs and secure an extra batting point but 125-9 was a poor return due mostly to soft dismissals. All five bowlers took wickets, backed up by solid catching, with Cauldicott 2-23, Rooney 2-24 and Jenkins 2-4 (off 5 overs) the pick. Despite the pitch drying out LI came out firing and with Nick Brooks and Steve Rawbone both taking two wickets apiece Woodies were 35-3 and 56-5. Opener and skipper Montgomery remained firm and having survived several confident lbw appeals he was dropped off a sharp chance. That was the turning point as he began lofting the ball and assisted by veteran Stone the winning runs were added in 15 overs for a five wicket victory with plenty of overs to spare, Montgomery finishing unbeaten on 71.
